Frequently Asked Questions

Mobile-first indexing refers to the practice used by Google Search Engine and Crawlers to index and rank webpages on Google Search Engine Results Page (SERP).

In the past, Google indexed and ranked the desktop version of a webpage using its desktop agent to evaluate the page's relevance to the user's query.

However, since July 2019, Google has swapped to its smartphone agent to crawl and index pages.

Note: Some older sites may still be indexed via desktop crawlers, but this is now being phased out.

Mobile SEO refers to optimising website content that is friendly to mobile crawlers and can be viewed by users on smartphones and tablets with no issues.

As Mobile-first Indexing has become Google’s preferred method of crawling and indexing. Mobile-First SEO has grown in importance, and only by optimising for Mobile SEO can you see improvements in organic traffic.

Mobile SEO vs. Desktop SEO is a very interesting topic and changed a lot over the last 5 years.

Here are the main differences between Mobile Search & Desktop Search:

1. Ranking Factor Differences. Desktop & Mobile algorithms are different and certain elements Algorithm elements for Mobile are given higher weightage over Desktop and vice-versa.

2. Location. Mobile SEO focuses on showcasing hyper-localised results by correlating the query with the Search Devices GPS data. Desktop SEO focuses on showcasing more generalised results and doesn’t leverage location data as much.

3. Search Engine Results Page Layout (SERP Layout). Mobile devices are smaller and as a result Google only showcases data in a single-column format. Meaning data resulting from Featured Snippets is going to be stacked and there will lesser SERP real estate and in turn fewer results on the first page. On the other hand, desktop devices are larger and have a two-column layout with the majority of the Featured SERPs being shown in a second column. Allowing greater SERP real estate.

4. Device Specific Results/Searching Features. Mobile search results are impacted by device operating systems. As Google tries to only show results that are compatible with your device. Similarly, based on your device and OS you gain access to more methods of Searching. Desktop results on the other hand are less skewed for Device specific software and while other searching methods exist; they are relatively less utilised.

Mobile SEO has grown in importance over the last few years and with it comes a different set of benefits that can only be attained by optimising for mobile search.

1. Organic Search Rankings & Algorithms: There is a higher weightage given to Mobile Search Engine Optimization scores; and as a result, your organic rankings are tied to it.

2. Improved User Experience: When we optimise a website to rank well for Mobile SEO, we are also optimising the website’s user experience on mobile devices. This results in higher engagement, improved load times and improved overall usability.

3. Customer Reach & Engagement: 58%+ of Google search traffic is originating from mobile devices. 40%+ of all transactions are made through mobiles/tablets.
